Naissance d'une Montre (1) - Time Æon Foundation

In 2007, Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey and Philippe Dufour, all members of the Time Æeon Foundation, came to an alarming conclusion: due to increasing industrialisation and the massive use of automation in the watchmaking world, an entire heritage of historical and traditional manual skills and craftsmanship was on the brink of extinction. They decided to take action, joining forces to train a student and pass their knowledge on to him. This student would then put into practice the techniques he had learnt by creating a timepiece by hand and with the help of historical manual machines. He would then in turn pass on his acquired skills to future generations, thus saving a certain idea of watchmaking excellence from oblivion.

Their chosen student was Frenchman Michel Boulanger, a teacher of watchmaking at the Diderot vocational school in Paris. The “Naissance d’une Montre” (“Birth of a Watch”) project, which began in 2009, was officially launched in Geneva in January 2012 at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH). Every month Michel, the teacher who went back to school, travelled to La Chaux-de-Fonds to be trained by Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey and Philippe Dufour, as well as various specialists working at Greubel Forsey.

Over a period of six years, these return journeys between Switzerland and his workshop in the Beauce region of France allowed him to produce an exceptional timepiece: an understated, rounded wristwatch driven by a hand-wound three-hand movement and featuring a tourbillon mechanism in the great tradition of 19th-century watchmakers, particularly the tradition instigated by Jacques-Frédéric Houriet and Abraham-Louis Breguet. In order to showcase the tourbillon’s mechanisms, the architecture of the timepiece comprises an off-centred dial presenting the hours and minutes. Despite not being visible, the finish of each piece is given particular importance: “Naissance d’une Montre” is very much concerned with the idea of extreme hand craftsmanship.

This first timepiece, entitled “Montre École” (“School Watch”) was given a score of 100/100 by the independent guide The Watch Enthusiast.

On 30 May 2016, it was auctioned at Christie’s in Hong Kong for a record 1,461,507 USD. The money raised from the sale will finance current and future projects.
